So you must have returned to Seoul when you were about ten years old and after the residual effects of war had diminished?

Yes, I returned towards the end of my 2nd grade. I attended Dong Shim Elementary School starting from my 3d grade until my 5t grade year. The school was located over a small hill in Hyehwa-dong, and I lived in my home located in Shinsuhl-dong.

My father is the oldest son in his family so he had the responsibility of staying with my grandparents, who were ill at that time, in order to take care of them. Then I followed my parents who worked in (Yun Seh) college but later moved to Joong Ang College in Hooksuk-dong.

There, I resided in a luxurious westernized red –brick house, which was three stories tall and with a veranda. It was one of the few houses that the Japanese soldiers had left behind, and we had such a beautiful view of the Han River from there. My mother didn't feel very well at that time.

It was summer that we moved out from my grandparents and it felt like such a distance we had to travel to reach our destination. In the middle of the house moving we passed by the city center of Myeong-dong, and I was amazed to see gathered together in one area for the first time in my life.

Since the 2nd semester of my 5th grade I had attended Eunroe elementary school still existing today. so many people It was amusing to remember how worried my maternal grandfather was about crossing the Han River. He was so old fashioned that he expected everything beyond the river to be rural and country-like.

He used to be a vice president of the first major department store ever created in Korea known as the Hwashin Department store, and he believed only the area within the four main gates of Old Seoul could be considered as the 'real' Seoul.

During the holidays, my cousins often visited my home and stayed for about a week each time. They regarded visiting that different from the rest of major Seoul, and I had been there until the first semester of my senior year in college.

I remember growing up around the river; luxuriant reeds everywhere, a sandy mound along the river, plenty of fresh water clams and the sound of the breaking ice from the frozen river in winter. I didn't have any particular interest or a talent in exercise, but I enjoyed skating a lot during all over the winter. Strangely enough, I was skating alone all the time.

-When was your first encounter with fine art?

It would have to be before I moved to Hook Suhk Dong. In my 3d grade of Dong Shin Elementary school my friend and I participated in a sketching contest where individual students had to depict their natural surroundings.

The competition took place in a Buddhist temple known as Bomunsa. My friend who majored in Westernized Painting ended up winning the competition, while I received nothing for my hard work. I can remember having been frustrated with American crayons at that time, seem to create the color I wanted. This is the first memory I have had in terms of art.

-That is not a very good memory at all. 

You couldn't paint didn't win the competition, either.

I can't say my memory of the sketching competition left me with only pain and sadness. During that time, my mother had an exquisite interest in academic art, and she was well educated for those days.

She graduated from Sook Myeong Women's University and majored in Modern Science and she had always dressed in the traditional Korean dress known as Hanbok. Along with her marriage, my mother had to fill several roles of a housewife, a daughter-in-law and a mother, so she had to put a hold on her interests in academics for her family. However, she read up on art, and worked on paintings whenever possible.

She always drew portraits of girls with an oval face, and she liked to paint them as wearing a slightly longer than the usual cropped style of the time. She would never draw their bodies, however, I always found it to be interesting and peculiar. I was introduced into the art so naturally as I had seen her keeping books close to her and working on her art all the time.

I haven't go any special beginning to my career as an artist: Before I realized it, I had already started working on art, and it seemed like a tailored life I was born into. Perhaps that's the reason why I (한국화가 송수련,한지화가 송수련,송수련 화백,宋秀璉,SONG SOO RYUN,송수련 작가,Hanji Painter SONG SOO RYUN,한지작가 송수련,종이회화 송수련,여류중견화가 송수련, KOREA PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN, KOREAN PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN) enjoyed art classes so much at schools and why I always chose art as my extracurricular activity.
