- Shall we begin with your life having grown up as a child?

I grew up in my grandparent's house in Shin-Suhl Dong, Dong Dae Moon Gu, which is located within old Seoul. It was a big two-story house and had a large garden. My grandfather used to work as a manager in a bank, so my family was wealthy enough to live in such a nice house at that time.

There was a storehouse right next to my house, and in the porch, gourd flowers were in blooming season. I couldn't remember if the gourds themselves were growing, but I can still do their white flowers vividly. The storage was completely covered in ivy and this ivy on occasion even managed to make its ways into the house windows.

Recently, I tried to grow ivy on my current house in Sang Do Village, but I realized this was merely nostalgia for my past. I wanted to revive the nostalgic scenery in my childhood.

In the garden, we had a single grape tree that we never pruned, so the fruit never grew properly. Next to this grape tree there was a single hardy cluster plant thriving wildly. We also had a wooden floor overlooking our yard, and in front of it grew a group of water lilies, and even a tree which bloomed flowers resembling gypsophila (baby's breath).

My mother used to tell me that the flower was called "Katsumiso" at the time. It's probably the Japanese name for the plant, but I am not completely sure of this fact, even to this day.

- This must have been when you were very young, but you still remember all the

little details?

The memory I have of Shin Suhl Dong house is when I was ten years old, so I wasn't that young. Before my age of ten, I used to live in Inchon with my grandparents. My grandfather had been transferred to Inchon and he wanted me to live with him in his company house because he was house, which used to belong to the Japanese soldiers in the past.

Right beside the house there was also a small garden where my grandmother used to grow tomatoes. I can still remember running around that area when I was young.

- It sounds like you had a wonderful childhood.

Many people have a similar childhood to mine. However, the Korean War had also begun during that time. One day when I awoke, I noticed all of the windows in my neighborhood were broken, and people were in panic. Because I was so young, I couldn't know for sure what was exactly going on, but I knew whatever it was, it was serious.

On one of the wagon-carts, someone had a large grandfather clock lying of everything else; I can lively remember the large pendulum. Lucky for me, my family didn't experience much of the negative effects of the Korean War because we were able ended, to seek refuge on a small island in front of Inchon called Poongdo. Once the war we were able to return safely back home.

I do have one particular memory that stands out from my stay in Inchon. One day I was playing in the garden with some dandelions, and when I pulled a leaf off, I noticed a white secretion.

Curious as to what it was, I put the plant towards my mouth, tasted it and noticed it to be overwhelmingly bitter. The white secretion from the green plant led me into a profound level and it made me interested in the contents of nature itself.
