On the occasion of my Solo invitational exhibition at the Misulsegye, Seoul, I am now looking back my life. Even in early primary school years I think I showed artistic talent in paintings and drawings. My paintings were quite often well admired by teachers and posted on the wall. It encouraged me a great deal.

손문자 작가(ARTIST SOHN MOON JA)로서의, 전시에 앞서 내 그림인생을 돌아본다. 그림에 관한 가장 이른 기억은 초등학교 2학년시절 내 그림이 자주 담임 선생님의 손에 높이 들렸던 것이다. 선생님께서 반 아이들에게 너희들은 신발 벗고 뛰어도 문자를 못 따라 간다고 하신말씀이 지금도 귀에 생생하다. 특별히 그림 공부를 한 것도 아닌데 재능이란 게 있었던 모양이다.

I was admitted to Ehwa Girls middle school and rejuvenated by teachers, particularly teacher Jang Woon Sang, Moon Mi Ae and Kim Byung Ki. I then had absorbing feelings about the world of paintings. Graduating high school I went Dept. of Grafted Art, Art College, Seoul National University.

어린 시절 나름대로 그림과 서예 솜씨를 인정받고 이화여자중학교에 입학했다. 중학교 미술선생님이셨던 장운상 선생님께서도 내 그림 솜씨를 칭찬해 주셨고, 나는 신나서 그림을 그렸다. 생각해보면 이 시기부터 차츰 미술의 세계로 들어선 것 같다. 고등학교시절에는 문미애 선생님, 김병기 선생님께서 지도해 주시어 서울대학교 미술대학 응용미술학과에 입학하게 되었다. △글=서양화가 손문자(Writer by Artist Sohn Moon Ja) △번역=박규태(translated by Prof. Kyu Tae Park)
