장손에 외아들이었던 손동준(孫東俊)이 서예를 시작한 것은 할아버지의 권유로 초등학교 1학년 때부터이다. 어릴 적부터 자연스럽게 서예를 접하게 된 그가 중고등학교 때에 들어선 인사동에서 살다시피 서실이며, 화실을 드나들게 된다. 아마도 이때부터 서예에 대한 인식을 학습의 대상인 동시에 장인정신과 선비정신을 겸비해야 한다는 덕목을 스스로 갖게 되지 않았나 싶다.

Son, Dong-Jun, the eldest grand son in his family, started calligraphy on his grandfather's recommendation when he was in the first grade of the elementary school. He who naturally got in contact with calligraphy since he was a little boy spent most of his time in calligraphic and artistic ateliers in Insa-dong during his secondary school period. Perhaps, during this period, he accepted calligraphy not only as an object to learn, but also as something that must accompany mastermind and scholar-like attitude.

칭찬이 사람을 키운다고 했던가. 그저 취미로만 그칠 수도 있었을 서예였는데, 손동준은 결국 90년대 초를 전후해 생겨난 대학의 서예학과 덕분에 정식 서예학사 초창기 멤버가 된다. 현재 국내의 서예학과는 모두 5곳(원광, 계명, 대구예술, 대전, 경기)에 신설되어 있는데, 손동준의 경우 거의 원광대 원년 멤버로 대학 1학년 재학시절 이미 미술대전 입상은 물론 KBS전국 휘호대회에서 뛰어난 두각으로 최고상 수상을 수상하기도 한다.

Someone said that praise makes people grow. Thanks to the new-opening of calligraphy major in universities in the early 1990s, he could continue his studies and achieved his bachelor degree in calligraphy. At present, there are five universities which have calligraphy major in Korea: Wonkwang University, Keimyung University, Daegu Arts University, Daejeon University, and Kyonggi University. Son, Dong-Jun is one of the first graduates, majored calligraphy, in Wonkwang University and he already won a prize in the Grand Art Exhibition and received the best prize in KBS Calligraphy Contest while studying there.

창의적인 작가로서의 작품연구와 새로운 감성적 소통의 문제를 지향한다는 것은 어쩌면 젊은 서예가로서 가질 당연한 사명감이라고 할 수도 있다. 최근엔 현대사회 속에서 컴퓨터나 마케팅의 일환으로 전통적인 서체를 응용한 캘리그래피가 새로운 영역으로 등장하는가 하면, 갖가지 재료실험과 서체 개발 등이 이어지고 있다. 손동준의 그의 대표적인 주자라 할 수 있겠다. 하지만 손동준의 고민은 이러한 노력들이 자칫 잘못하면 서예의 고유성을 저해하는 위기를 초래할 수도 있다는 점을 유념하고 있다. 따라서 그 자신 역시 철저히 전통적인 기본을 바탕에 둔 ‘온고지신’의 실천에 유념하고 있다.

One might say that it is a natural attitude for a young creative calligrapher to think over his/her work and to try to pursue a way to communicate with the public. Recently, the calligraphy adapted from the traditional writing styles has risen as a new area of computer or marketing and a various experiment on materials and development on new writing styles are continued. Son, Dong-Jun is right there at its front line. However, what he worries is that such movement might obstruct the original characteristics of calligraphy. Therefore, he tries to review the old and to learn the new, based on traditional fundamentality.

손동준은 전각에 있어 심적인 스승으로 철농 이기우 선생을 꼽는다. 역대 대통령의 전각(篆刻)을 맡는 등 한국 전각의 대가로 알려진 철농 선생의 작품 한 점을 서실 한 쪽 벽면에 걸어 두고 매일 같이 ‘바른 서예가로서의 길’에 대해 자문하며, 긴장의 끈을 놓지 않는다는 손동준. 그의 이번 전각전이 조금이나마 한국 전각문화가 묵은 옛 때를 벗고 현대화되어 새로이 변모하는 계기를 마련하는데 일조할 수 있길 기대한다.

As his spiritual teacher he presents Lee Ki-U, the carver who engraved ex-presidents seal. He has placed one piece of his work on the wall and everyday reminds himself to seek a right path to become a true calligrapher. I expect that his present exhibition will help Korean engraving art become modernized as it gets rid of old unrefinedness.
