“색은 빛이 없다면 존재할 수 없다. 또한 빛은 색을 통해 발현된다. 그러므로 빛과 색은 삶과 죽음이 둘이 아닌 것처럼, 음과 양이며 본질과 현상이고 둘이면서 하나다. 내 작품은 본질인 빛을 해체해 빛의 삼원색을 만들고 이들을 다시 융합해 새로운 나비의 색깔들을 만들어낸다. 끊임없는 해체와 융합을 통해 자신을 다시 조직해내는 생명현상과 연결되는 작업이다. 생명은 끊임없이 무엇인가를 새롭게 만들어 내는 힘이다.”라는 작가의 말은 바로 이에 대한 정확한 설명일 것이다.

“Color can’t be exist without light, and light appear through color, therefore light and color is In and Yang(chinese philosophy(In- Yang)), essential and Phenomenon, two simultaneously one, as life is not different thing from life. I dissolved light, that is essential, so that I made the tree primary colors of light and then reunified it to make new colors for butterflies. Through endless repeating it, I want to connect it to biological phenomenons that re-construct itself through endless repeating disjoint and reunification. Life is the power making new endlessly.” This her saying is very accurate answer of it.

첨단 LED를 이용하여 빛의 삼원색을 3차원 공간에 구현함으로써 그는 ‘빛으로 그린 그림’을 실현하였다. 그리고 이를 다시 디지털적 가공을 통해 2차원의 공간에 환원함으로써 자신만의 독자적인 작품세계를 구축하였다. 결국 이 역시 색과 빛은 삶과 죽음처럼 둘이면서 하나로 변화의 양 끝에 서로 맞물려 있다는 그의 사유를 구체적으로 반영하며 조형적으로 표출하는 것이다.

She realized painting painted with light using LED on the three dimensional space, through processing by digital mechanism, and restoring it on a two dimensional plane. Passing by these processing, she achieved her own unique world of art work. Ultimately, This is also the formational expression reflected her thought that light and color is connected each other at their tails as if life and death do.

현상과 본질에 대한 작가의 사유는 어쩌면 장자의 호접몽에서의 물화(物化), 혹은 불가에서의 색즉시공(色卽是空)과 불이(不二)와 매우 근접한 것이다. 작가와 나비는 이미 구분되어지지 않는 일체화를 이루고 있으며, 이에서 파생되는 생명, 혹은 창조는 변화의 양태를 설명하는 수식일 따름이다. 결국 작가에게 있어서 나비는 ‘인간의 자유를 향한 의지와 생명력’이며, 그것은 바로 자신이 마주한 삶에서 치열하게 체득한 사유이자 성찰의 주체인 자신의 반영인 것이다.

The thought of her about phenomenon and essential may be very closed to 「mul-wha (unification of objects)」 of 『Zuang zi』 or 「Philosophy of Kong」 in buddhism. Butterfly and herself is unified, life or creation is just illustration to express change and reformation. Consequently, Butterflies for her are the will to liberty, power of vitality, the reflection of herself as the owner of self-reflection and thought gotten from the life that she faced and endured.

나비를 디지털 기술을 차용한 현란한 화면이 단순한 형상의 자극으로만 읽혀지지 않는 것은 이러한 진지한 사유가 전제되었기 때문일 것이다. “작업은 내 삶을 찾아가는 여정이다. 그 길에서 나비는 언제나 멋진 길동무가 돼 주었다. 알에서 번데기로, 다시 나비로 허물을 벗고 자신을 변화시켜 멋진 모습으로 태어나는 나비에서 나는 의식의 전환을 통한 끊임없는 변화와 재창조의 힘을 얻는다. 내 작품이 보는 이에게 새로운 힘과 희망으로 부활하기를 바란다.”라는 말은 그가 왜 ‘나비작가’로 불리는지에 대한 명쾌한 답인 셈이다.

The reason that the her very splendid piece using digital techniques is not read as only stimulation of configuration is that there is this deep and serious thought as a premise. “My work is a itinerary to find my life. On this way, butterflies have become my good traveling companions. I am getting the power of endless change and re-creation through the transformation of consciousness, from butterflies born again as a beautiful and great appearance, from eggs to pupas, and then cast off their shells. I hope my piece born again as new power and hope to viewers.” This is the definite answer the question, “why is she called ‘a butterfly artist’?”

◇나비작가 김현정(金顯靜)

나비작가 김현정은 나비를 소재로 하는 작가 중에 자신만의 독창적인 기법으로 다양하게 표현하는 가장 현대적인 아티스트라는 평을 받고 있다. <Flying Light> <Rebirth>등을 주제로 21번의 개인전을 가졌다. 서울, 함평, 순천, 뉴욕, 베이징, 동경, 홍콩, 카디프 등 80여회의 초대, 기획전에 참여하였고 상명대학교에서 미술학과 한국화전공, 교육대학원에서 미술교육석사를 졸업한 후 상명대학교 조형예술학 박사과정을 수료하였다.

◇Hyunjung Kim (Navi Kim)

Called ‘Navi artist’, Hyunjung Kim is assessed for one of the most modernistic and unique artists who are working with butterflies as motive. She has held solo exhibition about 21 times, having subjects of <Flying light> and <Rebirth> ect. Seoul, Hampyon, Sunchon, New York, Beijing, Tokyo, Hongkong, Kadiff and was invited 80times of grand exhibitions. She graduated from Sangmyung University and achieved Master’s degree of art education and completed the process of Ph.D of Department of Plastic Art & Design in order at the same University.
