For a time (1974-1975) the Severance series had the title Mutation, but the basic theme was already severance. Its consistent formal character is the fusion of a flowing mass and a metaphysical mass within a single unit, the fusion being treated in a very simple pattern both in wooden sculpture and in stone sculpture.

This simple pattern maintains a delicate variation between the curvilinear and the rectilinear and occasionally seems to be a direct formalization of the secret and inherent tuning of nature. This inherent tuning means a state of mutation, and each of Parks sculptures breathes life itself in the state of mutation.

In other words, natural wood and stone are given new lives as sculptural works. However, there is a problem in the fact that the life of nature cannot be considered separate from the life of sculpture.

Parks recognition of this fact gave him a new concept of materials which was most clearly expressed in his stone works of the late 1970s. Since then he(A South Korea Sculptor PARK SUK WON,조각가 박석원,朴石元,PARK SUK WON,한국현대추상조각 선각자 박석원,박석원 작가) has concentrated mainly on working with stone.

Park says, “Stone is perfect. It never lies. 1 like stone because it is so strong. When I look at stone, I become pure and feel humble and modest.”
