- So it was more like you have experienced nature by living in the midst of it rather than learning it from your research?

Certainly I am still a kind of outsider compared to farmers whose whole lives have been with the soil and with nature. However, looking back on my previous life, the relationship I have formed with nature is much more intimate than what most people may experience in their daily lives. Up to this date, I have been so thankful that I could spend my forties in a place filled with so much natural life.

- I believe this was around that time you chose to renew your faith as a Christian. Was there any specific reason for that?

No, not really. I did not come across any specific circumstances, but my mother-in-law was a very devout Catholic, so naturally, my kids ended up going to church as well. And as for me, I was always thankful to God that I could live my life as an artist. Not only for that, but also I had a deeper level of respect for the Creator of all things, In my forties, I came to face with several tough obstacles.

I felt that there was a greater power helping me survive through the hard times whenever a difficult situation occurred. One day I happened to speak with a priest, and he seemed to understand me so well. The priest called me to move closer to God after he realized that I was going through a difficult time. I did not have any reason to refuse, so I happily embraced God into my life. I became baptized soon some time after my initial meeting with the priest.

-I have heard that the exhibition of the lotus flower theme was given you huge repercussions in the past. Was it during the time in Jin-Joo?

The lotus flower is a theme I have always drawn since my college years. One day in Jin-Joo, my students found out my interest in lotus flowers reservoir where these flowers were abundant. The sight of that left me in a strange state of shock that I didn't know how to interpret.

In order to understand and identify the shock, I went back again and again several times through various seasons to observe the changes in the environment. I saw something of indescribable beauty each time I went, and suddenly I was hit with questions regarding the creation of the world.

The question came to me after I observed things like a bud of the water lily coming out the surface of the water, or the wavering leaves from the blowing winds. I tried to answer my questions by applying my imagination and by transforming the sceneries in my mind into the abstract. After this awakening I'd been through, I began working on various portrait paintings, and luckily a lot of people loved my work. I can say this because I managed to sell all of my art pieces during the exhibition.

- Wasn't there a public demand for even more of your works that were done in a similar style?
