- Is it true that your exhibition was the first one ever given in Korea by a female artist working strictly on abstract art?

There were people who quietly worked on Expressionism without giving an exhibition. I was just so young and rash as that much that I was able to hold my personal exhibition. On top of that, as a female artist without any noticeable school history but with three children already, I knew I should work much harder than others.

Otherwise I couldn't be recognized as an artist. So I kept on entering public competitions while hosting my personal art exhibitions. For I worked so hard and on so much material, I managed to consistently submit my pieces in various art competitions, and host my art exhibitions at the same time.

One of my work submissions was eliminated in the 1977 National Art Competition of Korea. Prof. AHN was unhappy with my constant entry in art competitions, as I had already received good remarks on the National Art Competition.

He thought that I was still foolishly holding on to the public competitions unlike as an artist who gave personal exhibitions. After he had been chosen to be one of the judges, whenever he saw my submitted work, he would find an excuse not to take my work out as one of the finalists.

However, I wanted to confirm my identity as an artist so as to overcome my limitations based on my other daily self such as a wife, as a daughter-in-law, and as aas a mother. That is why I kept applying for various public competitions even though I knew Prof. Ahn didn't approve it.

This was also around the time to get my own work studio ever since my marriage. I had lived in the city of Buchun at that time, and I had to take the subway everyday in order to get to my art studio located in near Ewha Women's University just like a full time employee. Because I had to sacrifice leaving my children at home, I kept reminding myself that I had to work that much harder while I travelled the distance from Seoul to Buchun every day.

This must be around the time you received a first place award at the national competition?

Yes. this was in 1978, and as you might have guessed the title of my work was

'Contemplation'.

-Your will and determination to push yourself through the difficulty of leaving your children at home, and working in your distant work studio must have started showing its first signs of progress during this time period as well?

The reason I(한국화가 송수련,한지화가 송수련,송수련 화백,宋秀璉,SONG SOO RYUN,송수련 작가,Hanji Painter SONG SOO RYUN,한지작가 송수련,종이회화 송수련,여류중견화가 송수련, KOREA PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN, KOREAN PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN)needed a work studio is because leaving the role of everyday life' is a necessity in order to devote oneself completely and wholeheartedly to art. This is the only time one can fully become an artist.
