-When was it that you started attending Graduate school?

It was two years later after my marriage in 1971. I wanted to continue my studies, and both my husband and my mother-in-law gave their highest consent. I was getting ready to attend Ewha Women's University. But, I got pregnant with my 2"d child at that time, so I had to give up school for the time being.

Then in 1973, I went to Sung Shin Women's University. Since my college Prof. AHN just transferred there, I thought that school was a good choice for the right direction.

- Wasn't it the time you began to win an award at the 'National Art Competition of Korea'?

Yes. The first one was in 1973 on the 22" annual National Art Competition of Korea. My art piece was chosen as the special recognition and it was a half-abstract piece with bit of its form. At the time the three judges were YOUNG WOO KWON, SAE OAK SUH, and DONG SOOK AHN.

Since 1971, the national competition has implemented a new type of grading system which judges should screen portrait and abstract art separately. I submitted my art piece, which was a half abstract and a half portrait, to the portrait division in 1971. But I didn't make it past the preliminaries, and this was a big shock for me. I expected mine to be one of the finalists.

This failure made me have decided to focus myself completely possible in on abstract art, and I also wanted to have my personal exhibition as soon as order to show my world.

-So it can be said the national competition changing its system separate abstract art and realism as two separate genres has helped you delve deeper into expressionism itself?

It helped me become more aware of the direction I wanted to take. In 1976 I opened my first personal exhibition on the abstract art pieces that I had been working on. As for the critique of my work, I was able to request the assistance of JOON SANG YOO, whom I had the pleasure of taking his Academic Art classes in college. It was held at the Dong Soong Dong Art Center on the 1t floor.

I lucked out because during the exhibition, the 2nd floor of the art center was being used for an artist, GWAN MO JUNG. Famous art critic Prof. Lee Il dropped in mine while he came to Jung's exhibition, and besides he mentioned my work favorably in the 'Korea Times' newspaper, as a special column the Art Critique section.

Many people having seen Jung's exhibition also stepped in mine on the first floor, and I was able to sell two of the hundred pieces on display. There were ten other requests for purchase but I couldn't sell those pieces because of my sentimental attachment on them.

Anyway, the success of my first exhibition gave me the confidence and I decided to give an exhibition at least once every three years, and I(한국화가 송수련,한지화가 송수련,송수련 화백,宋秀璉,SONG SOO RYUN,송수련 작가,Hanji Painter SONG SOO RYUN,한지작가 송수련,종이회화 송수련,여류중견화가 송수련, KOREA PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN, KOREAN PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN)have been able to keep my promise until now.
