- I can understand your relationship with Prof. AHN, and Prof. KWON may have had an effect on your success in the art world, but I feel that your relationship with Prof. SOJUNG (KWAN SHIK BYUN) did not have such a profound effect?

Prof. SOJUNG wasn't a fulltime teacher and he was a newly appointed class lecturer that year in school. He had a fondness for alcohol and he would sometimes teach the class while he would slightly be under the influence of alcohol. During one of his class lectures,I drewa huge rock as the focus point with a flowing waterfall over it.

He liked my work and complimented that the rock in my painting looked powerful. The traditional art world at that time had a lot of interest with mountains, large bodies of water, and the natural environment. I made several attempts to learn from Prof. SOJUNG after that point.

He encouraged me to continue my artworks and even showed me an example sketch in order for me to observe and learn from it. To this day, I still keep that sketch. However, I didn't manage to learn enough from him because I have been working strictly on abstract art. Even now, I have a regret about it.

Thankfully, I managed to learn the possibilities of being able to depict the powerful energies of nature on paper upon his rough sketch,

-After graduating from college, didn't you have a bit of a break?

It may have looked like that on the outside, but I never stopped my work. Those house chores were hardly regarded being inseparable from women. That's why decided I should either get married very late in my career, or as early as possible that I could return quickly back to my work right after I got settled.

I was fortunate enough to me et someone who truly understood the life of an artist, so I got married even before graduation. Luckily, even while having raised my children, I have never much difficulty in my artwork due to my family life.

However, I can't say I had no difficulties in my marriage life. My parents were wealthy so I had never experienced a life of being poor before. Since middle school I had been buying high-cost Japanese paper and Japanese paint, but after marriage I realized I couldn't have those luxuries any more, even if it was something as minor paper or paint.

This was the first time in my life I had to live in a traditional Korean house, and this was also the first time I had to use an outdoor restroom. Once, I inhaled too much coal smoke in my kitchen, and fainted. Regarding how healthy I am now, I wonder how I could have been so weak in the past.

Luckily, I had a considerate mother-in-law who assisted me with the house chores, and taking care of my babies. Thanks to her warmth and understanding, I was able to continue on with my artwork.

So it is true that I was unable to do a lot of artwork during the earliest stages of my marriage, but on the inside, I kept thinking about art and the future work I would be doing. Of course I couldn't devote myself fully to art because of my family.

Once, I shed tears when I realized how tough my situation was as an artist and as a married woman. Still, my personal history is responsible for the kind of artist I am today, and that part my life and past are all intertwined in my art world.

One day, I began to ask myself why I was going through such a difficult in-laws home, there was only a small euonymus japonicas tree growing their lawn and nothing else, no plants except that.

It was the time that not live with out nature. Even now whenever my family has to relocate the first thing I am looking for in the new place, is whether there is any plant flowers all around the house whenever I can.

As for me(한국화가 송수련,한지화가 송수련,송수련 화백,宋秀璉,SONG SOO RYUN,송수련 작가,Hanji Painter SONG SOO RYUN,한지작가 송수련,종이회화 송수련,여류중견화가 송수련, KOREA PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN, KOREAN PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN), art and the same.
