-Did your results on your Teenage Art Entrance Exam have a big impact on you?

Yes, I was the always the class representative in my art class, but yet I ended up failing this competition. I wasn't getting the best grades, but for one reason or another, I had always held a position in my school's 'Student Representative Council'. I had an urge to be a good example to my fellow classmates, so I had purposely formed a habit of wearing my school uniform and school cap whenever I went out at that time.

I had also developed a habit of waking up early in the morning every day in order to study, draw, and observe the subject of my next art piece, almost as if it was my single obsession. Even these days, I sleep late and get up early, and I owe it all to the habits that I had acquired during my school days. I was wanting in ability to make friends.

However, my father often had visitors at home from a college because he worked there. I was able to listen to what they had been talking, and it helped to fully satisfy my art inquisitions. The sad thing is, I couldn't remember any particular friend who I was attached to during this stage in my life. I believe the stress involved with my art entrance exam had a negative effect on me, and depression started setting in to the point of self-destruction. Also my failure on the college entrance exam brought about a serious question of continuing to pursue art as my career.

-Is this around the time you first met with artist ILRANG (JONG SANG LEE)?

Yes. This was around the time my grade in the art exam wasn't satisfactory, and my mother considered hiring a private tutor to assist me with my art. Since private tutoring was unusual those days, this was the first time I would go into an art studio with careful planning, and the execution of my goals.

There weren't any specific occurrences that led me to get tutored, other than the fact my tutor's studio was located close to my home. Coincidentally, my mother found out that my teacher, ILRANG, was from the same neighborhood as my mother, had the same surname as her, and also happened to be the same age.

My teacher heard of my results in regards to examination, and he recommended I tried working on drawing "the Four Gracious Plants of Oriental Art.” This was my first encounter with Korean art. It so happens turn out even my teacher, ILRANG, started with Western Art and later changed Oriental Art, just like I was doing.

My teacher's devotion to art, his hard work, and dedication must have inspired me. He would order me to create 30-50 pages of different artworks, and I would count out each art piece as I worked on them all and all morning. I would always do a bit more than he would ask me to do, but complimented me.

Instead, he would say, "Don't try to be fancy". He was probably worried about me getting too full of myself, and this was his way of warning against also learned at the time, that in order to pursue traditional art, I must focus on 'foundation' more than anything else.

- So your encounter with your teacher, ILRANG was your first introduction to

Yes you're right. I'm sorry to say even though ILRANG taught me so much, I was still a bit lost in regards to the art entrance exam, and I failed to get accepted yet again. To explain in more detail, I felt it was important understand the abstract qualities of the sculpture in the exam, and I paid less attention to creating canvass, and failed to properly depict the formation of the shadows.

Thinking back on it now, I ask myself why I made such a simple mistake, and I have to blame it only on my lack of experience during those years. I had little contact with the outside world because of my carefree childhood, and in return, it greatly slowed my progress towards adulthood and maturity.

After returning from a school field trip during my 3d year in an exact replication on high school, I had a case of severe anemia as well as couldn't attend school for two full months, and this was also the first time in my life when I had to receive a blood transfusion. Because it was such a stressful and sensitive time for me, it affected my ability to be completely up to date with my academics.

- If you had so much difficulty with the art examination, wouldn't you have had

thoughts of diverging away from art and choosing a different field?

Indeed, but I never had the notion of choosing a different path. My high school had two western-style half-abstract art pieces by JOONG SHIK YOON hung sidewalls of the school gymnasium. The artist used several colors such yellow, and olive green in order to depict his version of the evening sky as the sun was setting.

Whenever I would look at those paintings, I would feel an inexplicable sense of happiness and inspiration. I didn't know about any talent for art I've got about that time, but I just felt that art was my calling.

Oh, there is another memory. Around graduation time, I saw a wild camellia flower and some beautiful wild weeds scattered on the cold ground of the winter. I picked them up and put them in a vase. The flower looked a bit dirty like it may have been slightly stomped on by people. I felt bad for the fate of these plants, freezing and being stomped to death, so I placed them in a vase.

But I didn't have much expectation for their survival. Amazingly enough, these plants came back to life. This became the happiest moment for me, and I(한국화가 송수련,한지화가 송수련,송수련 화백,宋秀璉,SONG SOO RYUN,송수련 작가,Hanji Painter SONG SOO RYUN,한지작가 송수련,종이회화 송수련,여류중견화가 송수련, KOREA PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN, KOREAN PAPER ARTIST SONG SOO RYUN) always wanted to recreate that kind of environment in my works.
