Seoul is where I was bom and where I have lived ever since. It is now full of artificial structures, but in my childhood and adolescence it used to be in harmony with nature.

Such a contradictory experience enables me not only to absorb every bit of energy from Seoul, which has gradually turned into a modern metropolis, but also to commune with nature quite well. In the very moment I express my admiration for a magnificent building in Seoul, I find myself recalling the trees, grasses, and flowers that used to occupy that building site.

As I drive down the well-constructed highways near the Han River I recollect the midwinter scenery of the river being frozen hard with the sound of ice forming, and the field of reeds being lit up with the glow of the setting sun.

Seoul was and is as beautiful as ever. My life exists midway between nature and art. For this reason, I seem to be attracted to abstract painting, even while having

studied Korean traditional painting mostly based on figurative forms of art. I wouldn't be able to express myself through nature or art alone. I'm living every breath of my life somewhere in-between, where nature and art overlap.

◇The order of nature

As our living environment is being transformed into a gigantic artificial one, I feel more attached to the beauty of nature. This feeling of attachment does not just arise from my personal taste, for nature is the origin of every human being including me. As a small element of nature, I was destined to be born, brought up and to follow the natural course of life and death.

As a part of nature, I am not a fixed existence, but a lively one coming from the past and moving toward the future. I undergo numerous changes just like a tree, a clump of grass, and a drop of water springing up from a fountain in the heart of a mountain reaching the great Han River Life itself represents movement.

I have been trying to express the profundity of life that I've experienced and every meaning and trace imprinted on it.
