▲ 휴식, 53.0×45.5㎝ oil on canvas, 1997

The reason his early works were hard and strict was because of the sacrifice of the colors. Primitive colors can take hold over the whole paintings, so if one is drawing a tale, one musn't use too much of primitive colors. His artworks used to show tales.

Takes about child's mind and aspect of city life and the mood of the part was his usual themes. The lines used by knives were what made the forms. His works back then were lyrical with deep brown, blue and grey colors. Kim Myung Sik's (서양화가 김명식, 김명식 작가, 김명식 교수)recovery of colors came with the use of brush which was around the 1986. Before that he used of knife has and brush.

That he started to use brush instead of knife has significant meaning. It means that he chose everyday life instead of tales, colors it self instead of textures. "Chamber(1986),Hill(1985),Inside the Room(1989),and Rest(1991)"show the things of life and experience in colors.

A still life, scenery or a potrait drawn in Light –Green, Yellow, Red, Purple and blue are almost primitive and through this he shows “instant sensorial paintings.” This is because he has to draw the impression he has reciveral before those impression and images change. If you understand this, then you would understand Kim Myung Sik's(キムミョンシク,Andy Kim,金明植,김명식 화백) fast and rash brush lines and the soft mixture of colors.
