While Park made limited use of acrylic paint in order to accentuate the colors and tones of hanji as his main medium, the foundation of his unique coloring stem from traditional dyeing techniques using natural dye.

Tradition may not be the only element that infused and permeated into his canvas, his works. Park Chul’s artwork is not an expression of the artist’s own experience, but instead stimulation and inspiration of the precious nostalgia shared by most middle-aged people who have lived their lives to the full.

Some may consider Park’s art empty abstract work at a glance and foreigners may find it exotic, yet Park’s hanji relief works are the multisensory products of a dramatic performance delivered using both his body and mind. This may be one of many reasons why most of his works induce empathy from the contemporary viewer.

Park’s focus, such as tradition, Korean characteristics, the body, labor, persistence, sweat and breaths are all naturally derived from scenes within his daily life since childhood.

Straw bags and mats woven by old men as they sang work songs, beautiful rice cakes decorated using wooden rice-cake patterns during holidays, and picturesque lotus flowers blossoming on the small lake nearby the town, which are remembered and traced back as childhood memories, recollection of the past, or old traditions, are summoned and instilled into a piece of art by Park.
