패브릭 아티스트(Fabric Artist) 정정희는 직조나 디자인 등 섬유예술에서 독보적 위치를 차지하는 라르센(Jack Lenor Larsen) 교수에게 가르침을 받았다. 결혼한 지 얼마 되지 않았고 갓난아기를 친정에 맡겨둔 채 떠난 유학이었지만 그곳에서 라르센 교수에게서 교육을 받으며 섬유미술의 다양성과 가능성에 눈을 떴다.

Chung, Chung Hee, the Fabric Artist, was trained by Prof. Jack Lenor Larsen who had the utmost authority in all realms of the Fabric Art from weaving to design. It wasn’t an easy decision as she was a new mother and had to leave behind a 1-year old son in the care of the grandmother but she saw new and diverse possibilities of the Fabric Art under Prof. Larsen.

각종 패턴디자인을 비롯한 직조까지도 배우고 돌아온 그는 덕성여대를 비롯한 대학에서 섬유미술 강의를 시작하였다. 정정희 작가는 “나의 작품은 실로 만드는 예술이므로 직조라고 할 수 있는 타피스트리가 아니다”고 잘라 말한다. 자신의 작품이 씨실과 날실을 일정 규격으로 교차하며 무늬를 짜 넣는 행위만은 아니라는 의미이다.

Now with pattern design and weaving techniques under her belt, she came back to Korea and started teaching Textile Art in various schools including Duksung Women’s University. She firmly stated that “what I create is work of art using threads, therefore, cannot be called tapestry which is simple weaving.” She was emphasizing that it was much more than just weaving the warp and the weft to a pre-set pattern.

본인의 작품을 타피스트리라는 형식으로 말하지 않고 ‘아트 패브릭’이라는 분야로 규정한 이유는 “구성의 예술성과 구성에 맞는 실 선택, 그리고 색상의 조화가 생명인 아트 패브릭은 그림의 평면성이나 조각의 무색성 등의 단점을 보완하는 새로운 미술로 평가되고 있다”고 생각했기 때문이다.

She calls her work ‘Art Fabric’ instead of Tapestry because “the Art Fabric expresses the aesthetics of composition, provides the freedom of choosing the right thread for the composition, and creates harmony among different colors of the thread. This complements the flatness of paintings and colorlessness of sculptures.”

정정희 작가는 결코 다작의 작가가 아니며, 다작을 할래야 할 수도 없는 작가이다. 감각적으로 색실을 섞어가며 면을 만들고, 계획된 공간을 찾아가기에 결코 그 창작의 틈에 다른 손이 끼어들 여지는 없어 보인다.

Chung, Chung Hee can never be called prolific and never will be. Mixing and threading colored yarns to create the planes that turn into the planned space is a creative work process which takes all her efforts and only hers.
