After Sukju Lee moved from the metropolitan city of Seoul to the small suburban village of Yangsu-ri eight years ago, the colors of his paintings grew warmer and brighter. He began to use soft browns instead of chilly greys, and his recent works contain an even more generous and kind atmosphere.

이석주씨는 8년 전에 훌쩍 서울 스튜디오를 떠나 남양주 인근의 양수리로 왔다. 스튜디오를 옮긴 뒤로는 화면이 훨씬 밝아 졌다. 잿빛의 차갑고 오싹한 표정이 아니라 훈훈한 온기가 느껴지는 브라운 계통이다. 전체적으로 풍기는 작품의 분위기도 야박하지 않고 수더분하며 넉넉해 졌다.

Nothing seems to escape his eye. His paintbrushes move like a trout through water as they reveal details of his objects. What has caused these changes in his works of art? New environment? Wisdom of age? Some other, secret reason? In any case, he no longer wanders in bullish pursuit of new and shocking stimuli.

그러면서도 터럭 하나 빼놓지 않는 예리한 관찰력, 껑충한 묘사력은 칼집에서 방금 빼어든 검처럼 쨍하게 빛난다. 그의 손놀림은 가뿐이 숭어뜀을 한다. 작업실을 옮긴 탓일까. 그도 세월의 엄습을 피할 수 없어서 일까? 우리가 아리 못하는 사연 때문일까? 자세한 내막은 알지 못하지만 작품에 미세한 변화가 생겼다.

He seems to be mature enough to take a broad view of life and penetrate through to the truth behind the facts. When I visited his suburban studio, I felt as though I was meeting a different person. He used to have a serious face and a mind wracked with internal doubts. Now he seems to be a mature thinker of vision who can look at the landscape around him.

그것은 새롭고 달짝지근한 것을 찾아 헤매는 방랑벽이 아니라 삶을 더 원대하게 바라보는 개안(開眼)에서 비롯된 듯하다. 표면을 넘어 심연으로 다가선 그에게 원숙함을 느낀다. 이석주(LEE SUK JU)작가의 스튜디오를 방문하였을 때 여태껏 심각한 표정을 보아온 필자로서는 딴 사람과 만나는 것처럼 생소했다. 골똘히 자신의 내면에 집중하던 데서 눈을 들어 하늘과 들판과 강줄기를 바라보는 넓은 시야를 갖춘 중후한 관조자처럼 보였다.

Examining water, soil, trees, and wind, he is experiencing the wonders of life more and more. Once an anguished contemplator acutely observing social scenes, he is now a minstrel in his fifties merrily singing the praises of nature and life. I asked him the theme of his works these days.

작가는 물과 숲, 흙, 바람 따위를 접하면서 생명의 소중함을 배우게 되었다고 한다. 종전에 보여준 모습이 고뇌하는 사색가였다면 50대 중반의 이석주(李石柱)작가를 자연과 인생을 노래하는 음류 시인으로 묘사할 수 있을지도 모른다.

He answered: “love” He explained his love for people, plants, and animals with gentle diction and an amicable expression. He said that he had learned far more after shaking off the fetters of the big city.

요사이 작업 주제가 무엇이냐고 묻자 작가는 ‘사랑’이라고 했다. 서양화가 이석주(LEE SUK JU)의 사랑에 관한 이야기가 더 듣고 싶어 졌다. 사람에 관한 사랑, 식물에 관한 사랑, 동물에 관한 사랑 등을 여유 있는 말씨와 서글서글한 표정으로 이야기 했다. 작가는 도시의 굴레에서 빠져나온 뒤로 배운 것이 더 많아 졌다고 한다.
