세상을 넓게 보는 사람은 내 것의 소중함을 이해한다. 바꾸어 말해 넓은 세상을 여해하면서 유적지 등 문명의 역사를 돌아보거나 유학을 통해 신문명 사회에서 공부한 삶은 전통적인 가치의 중요성을 안다. 이러한 결과는 남의시각을 통해 나를 정확히 바라볼 수 있는 개관적인 자기평가 기준을 얻는데 기인한다. 특히 과학 문명으로 현대문명을 깊이 체험한 사람일수록 동양적인 가치의 주요성을 깨닫게 된다.

이정연(RHEE JEONG YOEN)작가의 경우도 이에 해당한다. 그는 미국에서 오랫동안 살았다. 공부가 목적이었다지만 그 과정에서 서구 현대미학을 탐닉하게 됐고 그러한 자신을 조금치도 의심하지 않았다. 그러다가 돌연 자신의 실체가 무엇인지 의문을 일으키게 되었다.
