In Rhee Jeong Yoen's recent series of 're-Genesis' what is very characteristic other than texture is that there appear again firm shapes just like bones or bamboos in her painting where everything used to be abstracted up to only thick lines. In her early work, there was nothing firm like a cross or a fish.
이정연 작가의 이번 ‘신창세기’ 연작에서, 그 Texture와 함께 특징적인 것은, 90년대 말기까지는 모양을 점차 추상화시키고 최후에는 모양이 거의 없어져 거의 굵은 선으로까지 되었던 그녀의 회화에 확실한 모양, 뼈와 같은 대(竹)와 같은 모양이 다시 등장한 것이다. 그러나 그 모양이 명확한 무엇(이전에는 십자가 혹은 물고기와 같은 것이었다)이라고 명명할 수도 없다.
It does not just happen that her work started from a certain shape, moved to absolute abstraction, and finally reached forms clearly distinguished from the background. But it is still not possible for us to tell what those forms are.
모양에서 출발해서 그것이 화면에 녹아 든 것 같이 추상화 시켜 놓았던 화가 이정연의 작품에 바탕과는 명확히 구별된 모양이 다시 등장한 것은 사소한 일이 아니다. 그러나 그 모양을 무엇이라고 명확히 말할 수 있는 것은 아니다.
This does not also happen by chance. Her painting of unique texture and forms of bones or bamboos, for me, signifies the very beginning of life or a certain event. In other words, her work is the very result of forms and texture.
그것도 우연이나 사소한 일은 아니다. 독특한 Texture와 뼈나 대 같은 특이한 모양으로 된 그녀의 회화는 나에게는 생명이나 어떤 일의 시작을 암시적으로 표현하고 있는 듯하다. 다시 말하면 모양은 아니고 모양(그림)과 바탕(Texture)에 의해서 만들어진 공간인 것이다.
Forms like bones or bamboos remind me of plants and a certain primary animals. So to speak, they remind me of the very beginning of a certain life. And we should notice that texture of those forms and one of the background are the same. Those forms are not different from the background.
뼈나 대와 같은 모양은 식물과 동시에 통(筒) 모양의 어떤 종류의 원생적인 동물을 연상시킨다. 즉, 어떤 생명체로서의 모양을 이루는 그 시초의 모습을 떠오르게 하는 것이다. 그리고 그 모양을 만들고 있는 바탕과 Texture의 바탕이 같다는 점에 주의해야 한다. 이 모양은 Texture에 갑자기 어디선가 날아 들어온 것이 아니다. 그것은 오히려 Texture 안에서 탄생한 것이라고 해야 한다.
Rather, they are born out of such texture of the background. For instance, a fertilized egg by a sperm becomes implanted on the uterine wall and from here a fetus can form its body.
예를 들면, 난자(卵子)와 정자(精子)가 결합된 것이 자궁내벽에 착상하여, 자궁 그 자체를 바탕으로 해서 태아가 그 모양을 이루어 가고 있는 것과 같은 것이다.
