In terms of technique, Rhee applies lacquer on hemp cloth to produce shapes: dots, lines, bones, bamboo, stones and clouds. She uses natural materials such as soil, charcoal, stone, and bone powders which are placed on the surface and then stained. Sometimes pieces of wood and traces of oyster shells can be seen, which give a thicker dimension to her canvases.

In fact, her recent works tend to have more of these bits and pieces of nature, highlighting the fact that she is not constrained by fixed boundaries, that she moves freely between the two and three-dimensions. The three-dimensionality of her work allows her to more effectively give shape to the divine, to express the vital energy of spiritual life. The tiny bits of wood and oyster shells are raw materials that reveal the intrinsic power of nature. They are in complete harmony with the hemp cloth, soil and other natural materials.

While living in the city of Wonju, Rhee happened to meet an artist who worked with lacquer, making her think deeper about its uses and applications. Rhee came to believe that lacquer art has a special and very close connection to Korean culture and Korean people. Wonju is a city well known for the quality of its lacquerware. In Korea lacquer is extensively used, applied to furniture, dishes and even coffins.

Its color is said to be friendly, the color of nature; it is durable and solid, very different from the color and texture of other surface coatings. Because of its unique properties, it does not run, dry, or mix well with other chemical materials. But once applied, it feels natural and gives off a deep, superior color. Rhee focuses on the properties of lacquer in her work, but not in a traditional way; it is a medium through which she creates new forms. Instead of applying the lacquer by spreading it neatly and delicately onto the cloth, Rhee manipulates it aggressively.

She dips her fingers and palms into the lacquer and applies it directly onto the hemp cloth. Her paintings are accomplished via direct bodily contact with the materials rather than using a brush as intermediary. Rhee values the process of painting with her body, a process influenced by her training in yoga, Zen meditation, prayer and hypogastric breathing. She sees her own body as the most important intermediary between the real and spiritual worlds.
