It is true Jeong Yeon Rhee’s amount of Indian ink and the color’s intentions in her brush strokes in the eighty’s give a similar image of an oil painting, but it probably is hard to deny that it has the special gesture that only the Indian ink Chinese drawing paper are in a complementary relationship, and because of this complementary, no matter how deeply she is involved in the modern age art, the Chinese drawing paper and the Indian ink are still unconsciously being used, which, in result, is concerned in her ninety’s products unintentionally.

During late eighty’s and early ninety’s, Rhee, Jeong Yoen live in America. During this time, she did not throw away her original material, such as Chinese drawing paper, Korean drawing paper and cotton. Instead she used materials actively to paint empty space, and she also use these as experimental materials. Her way of handling painting brush is getting tougher and accidentally. An impulse of mass’s power is getting more provocative color, sometimes cross, twister, fish, eye, triangle, square etc.

It probably is related with the myth of creation of heaven and earth. Before there was light and the word of God, when there was chaos, chaos is in the appearance of mass and the light and the words of God are represented by the order(Logos). Of course, there is no order in Rhee Jeong Yoen’s art work. But the fact that her ancestors are like the matters from Logos, which came from the chaos is not to be underestimated. But her drama of mass does not show anything like an order or periodical process that some of the modern age artist might call romantic. In other word, Rhee’s unconscious masses are advanced by coincidental impulse and also irrationally, and it seems to disappear like a fantasy.

For her ninety’s art works, the expression ‘mass’ should be changed to ‘molding’, and the series call ‘ManNam(the confrontation)’ and ‘MuJae(Untitled)’ is formed by sluggish brush stroke. And although it dose have the atmosphere of uncertainty, the canvas has the order of its own. Calling it ‘defining the order of mass’instead of ‘filling in the space’ will probably be right. The titles like ‘the Prayer’, ‘the Faith’, ‘Rescue’,and ‘the Mark of Life’ are more close to her ego then the names like ‘the Nature’, ‘the Form’, and ‘Citify’ from the eighty’s.
