작가 김현정은 나비를 자신의 작업을 견인하는 핵심적인 모티프로 차용하고 있다는 점에서 ‘나비작가’로 알려져 있다. 그러나 보다 심층적인 의미에서 분석해 본다면 작가의 나비는 그의 작업이 지니고 있는 형식이자 내용이며, 현상이자 본질임을 알 수 있다. 적어도 그에게 있어서 나비는 단순한 소재의 제한적 의미를 초극한 자아의 상징이며 자신의 사유를 구체화하는 의미 있는 실체로 읽혀진다. 이러한 의미에서 본다면 ‘나비작가’라는 호칭은 잘 부합된다 할 것이다.

Artist Hyonjeong Kim is Known as ‘a Butterfly artist’ because she uses butterflies as a key motive that draws her art works. But if we annalize her works in depth, we can know that butterflies in her works are forms and contents, appearances and essences. At least for her, Butterflies can be read as a symbol of her ego over the limited meanings of simple materials and as a meaning full substance with which she embodies her own thinking. Looking this point, It can be said that the name of ‘Butterfly artist’ is very fit her.

작가는 자신의 삶을 통해 감내했던 내밀한 사연들을 나비라는 상징성 강한 이미지를 통해 표출해 내고 있다. 작가는 평이한 삶의 안온함에서 작가로서의 숙명적 삶을 확인하고, 이를 통해 새로운 삶을 마주하는 과정은 나비의 우화(羽化)에 비겨 재창조 또는 부활(rebirth)의 상징으로 설명하고 있다.

She shows private story that she has endured during her life through butterfly, an image which has very strong symbolism. She expresses the process that she found the destiny of life as an artist in her daily living, and faced her own life very seriously, as a symbol of recreation or rebirth said metaphorically as the woowha(making wings) of butterflies.

또 삶과 죽음이라는 본질적이고 근본적인 문제 역시 이러한 변화의 과정으로 이해하는 작가의 사유는 결국 나비를 ‘인간의 자유를 향한 의지와 생명력’에 이르게 하고 있다. ‘생명이란 물리적으로만 존재하는 것이 아니라 끊임없이 새롭게 무엇인가를 만들어가는 힘’임을 깨달았다는 작가의 사유는 불교철학에서의 공(空)의 개념이나, 서양 기독교 철학으로서의 혁신과 부활, 전통적인 설화와 신화 그리고 현대 물리학 개념인 무한과 유한이 서로 해체되고 재 융합되며 조화를 이룬다는 이론과도 맞닿아 있다.

결국 작가에게 있어서 나비는 부단히 변화하는 삶의 양태에 대한 자신의 사유를 개진하는 것이며, 자신을 나비에 투영하여 그 변화 속에서 자유자재로 부유하고 유영하는 물화의 경지를 말하고 있다.

Also, The thinking that she understand the essential problem, life and death, as the process of this transformation, leads butterfly to the human being’s will to liberty and life. Her realization that life is not only the physical being but also the power that make somethings new continuously is connected with 「kong」, notion of buddhism, 「innovation」 「rebirth」 in Christian philosophy, traditional tales and myths, and a physics theory that infinity and finiteness are dissolved, re unified and than make harmony.

Ultimately, A Butterfly for her is the reflection of her own life, on which she endlessly endeavor, and she says the level of unification with objects, freely swimming in the changing of universe.

작가는 나비의 어원을 ‘날으는 빛’으로 이해하고, 나아가 히브리어의 예언자, 혹은 사명자라는 의미의 나비(Navi, Nabi)를 취하고 있다. 이는 자신에게 부여된 달란트를 소명의식으로 수용하고 이의 실천을 통해 존재의 이유, 삶의 의미를 확인하고자 하는 의지의 표명에 다름 아닌 것이다.

She understands the root of word of butterfly as flying light, going forward, gets the meaning of a prophet or a missionary in Hebrew language 「Navi」. This is the announcement of her will that she accepts her talents given by the God as a summon and confirms meaning of her own life.

날아오름은 이전의 것과의 결별을 통한 새로운 삶의 시작인 셈이며, 이를 숙명적인 소명의식으로 이해함에 ‘빛’은 중요한 상징적 의미를 지닌다. 작가는 ‘빛’을 ‘생명’으로 이해하고 이를 적극 수용함으로써 자신의 사유를 조형적으로 표출하고 있다.

Flying up is starting new ones through separating old ones, and understanding it as a destiny, the light has a very important symbolic meaning. She express her thought formatively by understanding and accepting lights as life.
