“달팽이 점액을 얼굴에 바른다고?”

영국의 소비자들은 아마 아직까지 한 번도 들어본 적이 없는 요상한 말일 테고 2년 전의 나라면 아마도 좀 역겹다고 생각했을 것 같다. 한국에서 이 달팽이 분비액은 마유나 벌꿀, 발효 성분처럼 과거 인기를 누렸지만 유행이 좀 지난 많고 많은 화장품 성분 중 하나다. 흔해지기는 했지만 달팽이 점액은 여전히 매력적이어서 많은 업체들이 해당 제품의 라인업을 유지하거나 계속해서 새로운 제품을 만들어 내고 있다.

달팽이는 점액 내의 ‘뮤신’을 이용해 거친 땅 위에서 입은 상처를 자가치료한다고 알려져 있다. 뮤신에는 사람의 피부에 도움을 주는 여러 영양 성분들도 많이 함유돼 있다. 달팽이 분비액의 피부보호 기능에 대한 광범위한 연구가 별로 없었음에도 한국 시장에서 오랫동안 사랑받는 아이템으로 남았다. 유명 K뷰티 블로그 ‘달팽이의 50가지 그림자(Fifty Shades of Snail)’과 ‘홀리 스네일(Holy Snails)’의 이름에서도 이런 사실을 엿볼 수 있다.

지난 15개월간 달팽이 마스크, 크림, 에센스 등의 여러 다른 제품들을 섭렵한 결과 나는 달팽이 제품의 성능에 완전히 매료됐다. 달팽이 제품을 데일리로 썼더니 결과가 놀라웠다. 피부를 깨끗하고 부드럽게 유지시켜주는 것이 아닌가.

내가 즐겨 쓰는 3가지 달팽이 제품을 소개하기에 앞서 내 피부에 대해서 말하자면 중건성에 때때로 트러블이 있는 편. 이 제품들이 모두의 피부에 적합하다고 할 수는 없고 나의 개인적인 의견일 뿐이라는 것을 강조하고 싶다.

첫 번째 제품은 미샤의 수면팩 ‘수퍼 아쿠아 셀 리뉴 스네일 슬리핑 마스크’이다. 미샤 공식 홈페이지에 따르면 이 제품은 피부 세포 제생에 도움을 줘 건강하고 밝은 피부를 만들어 준다고 한다. 수면팩은 저녁 시간의 스킨케어 과정에서 맨 마지막에 도포하고 아침에 물로 씻어주면 된다.

장점은 수분감이 매우 좋으면서도 두껍거나 오일리하게 발리지 않는다는 것이다. 개인적으로 잠자리에 들 때 헤비한 촉감의 크림을 좋아하지 않는 나로서는 이 점이 최고인 것 같다. 아침에 일어나면 피부가 더 부드럽고 통통하게 젊어 보인다. 피부에 약간의 붉은기나 자극이 있었을 때도 진정 효과가 있었다.

단점은 향이 꽤 강한 편으로 향에 예민한 사람들에게는 거부감을 줄 수 있을 것 같다. 그리고 제조사가 주장하는 피부가 밝아지는 효과에 대해서는 잘 못 느끼겠다는 것. 이 제품은 달팽이 여과액을 15%만 함유해 달팽이 제품을 선호하는 내게는 성분 면에서 그다지 만족스럽지 못했다. 피부가 진정을 필요로 하거나 많이 거칠고 건조할 때 가끔씩 써주는 아이템이다.

두 번째 소개할 제품은 새로운 제품인데 현재 나의 기초화장 과정에 빼놓지 않는 아이템이다. 바로 ‘싸이닉 올인원 스네일 앰플’이다. 제조사는 이 제품이 피부의 생기와 탄력을 찾아주는 기능이 있다고 설명한다. 이 제품은 에센스 다음 단계, 크림 사용 전 단계에 사용한다.

이 제품은 용량이 많아 이른바 가성비가 좋다. 다른 앰플 제품들에 비해 물과 같은 제형의 가벼운 촉감으로 빨리 스며든다. 특히 피부의 붉은기와 트러블이 문제가 될 때 진정효과를 주고 나아가 힐링 효능까지 있으나 이 제품만으로는 충분한 수분감을 얻기는 어려워 몇 겹의 수분제품을 덧발라줄 필요가 있다. 그런데 이 제품의 패키징은 마음에 들지 않는다. 펌프나 드롭 제품과는 달리 제품을 퍼서 쓰는 스쿱 타입이라 스쿠퍼와 용기에 제품이 잘 묻고 지저분해지기 때문이다. 제품에 달팽이 여과액은 50% 함유돼 있다.

마지막 추천 제품은 지난 8개월간 애정하는 아이템으로 모든 지인에게 권하고 있는 추천 일순위 화장품이다. 바로 달팽이 여과액이 96% 함유된 코스알엑스의 ‘어드밴스드 스네일 96 뮤신파워 에센스’다. 용기의 라벨은 이 제품이 오일 성분 없이도 피부의 수분 증발을 막고 부드럽게 지켜준다고 설명하고 있다. 나는 이 제품을 첫 단계 에센스 뒤 두드려 발라준다.

이 제품이 좋은 것은 달팽이 점액이 96% 함유돼 있어 그 성분이 단순하다는 점이다. 성분이 많이 들어가지 않아 피부 자극이 적고 달팽이 점액의 효능은 극대화된다. 그만큼 내 피부에도 이 제품이 가장 극적으로 효과를 나타냈다. 특히 피부 트러블이 있을 때 트러블 부위에 제품을 바르고 잠들면 아침에 붉은 기가 가라앉고 여드름이 훨씬 작아져 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 빠르게 스며들어 낮과 밤 언제든 사용할 수 있고 무향인 것도 마음에 들었다.

개인적으로는 단점을 거의 찾아볼 수 없는데 다른 사람들은 텍스쳐가 조금 특이하다고 말하곤 했다. 순수 달팽이 점액과 유사한 부드럽고 끈적이는 촉감 때문인데 피부에 도포하면 금세 끈끈한 느낌은 없어진다.

To many consumers in the UK, putting snail slime on your face is still fairly unheard of, and two years ago I was part of the masses that would have been disgusted. In Korea, snail secretion filtrate is actually a fairly old trend, with other ingredients such as horse oil, honey, fermented ingredients, and specialized waters, among many others, gaining popularity over the past year. However, snail slime has not lost its attraction with many companies continually producing new snail products and maintaining snail lines.

The use of snail secretion filtrate in beauty products makes sense. The snails use the mucin to heal themselves as they move over rough ground, and it is packed with nutrients that could be beneficial for human skin. Whilst there is not extensive research to prove the positive benefits of snail extract for the skin, the long lasting presence in the Korean market, plus individuals' success with snail products (seen prominently in K-Beauty blogs such as Fifty Shades of Snail and Holy Snails), definitely makes it an ingredient that seems to be sticking around.

After fifteen months of experimenting with different snail masks, creams, essences, and other products, I am firmly convinced of the power of the snail! I use snail products daily, and for me the results have generally been fantastic, particularly with healing and maintaining clear, soft skin. For this article I have decided to focus on my top three snail products. I have normal/combination skin, with occasional breakouts, and what works for me, may not for the next person. I’d also like to highlight that these are all my own opinions.

So, onto my slimy picks. In third place its Missha’s sleeping mask.

Product name: Missha Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Sleeping Mask

Product description: On the Missha site, the company claims the mask ‘gives a cell renewing benefit for bright, healthy skin’. Sleeping masks are applied at the end of your evening routine, and washed off in the morning.

Pros: The sleeping mask is extremely moisturizing but not too heavy, and doesn’t leave my skin oily. For me, this is perfect. I don’t like heavy creams, and I don’t want it to rub off on my pillow while I sleep.

When I wake in the morning my skin feels soft, plump, and rejuvenated. If my skin has suffered irritation or redness, I find that the mask soothes my skin. I really like the texture– it’s very smooth and, for such a moisturizing product, absorbs well without stickiness.

Cons: The scent is fairly strong and perfumey. I don’t mind it too much but I imagine others might.

The cream also claims to brighten. I haven’t noticed huge brightening benefits, but I use other products for this purpose.

The product only contains 15% snail extract. If I was looking specifically for a snail product this might not be enough to satisfy me, but this also means it contains a number of other ingredients which I believe help with moisturizing and skin conditioning.

Conclusion: I love having this mask in my rotation, particularly if my skin needs soothing, or feels rough and dry. It's a great overnight moisturizer and, like I said, it doesn’t leave me an oily mess.

In second place is a newer product for me, although one that definitely has a solid place in my basic routine.

Product name: Scinic All-in-one Snail Ampoule

Product Description: The label reads ‘Scinic All in One Snail Ampoule restores your skin’s vitality and elasticity with Snail Secretion Filtrate’. I apply this after my essences, and before my creams.

Pros: The jar is huge and makes it incredible value for money in my opinion. It’s much lighter and more watery compared to my other ampoules, but this means it absorbs quickly and does not leave my skin feeling heavy.

This has really soothed my skin when I’ve suffered with redness or a breakout, and, to some extent, helped with the healing. These are definitely the biggest attractions of the product for me.

Although it is not hugely moisturizing on its own, it does add a level of moisture to my routine, and I like building layers of moisture.

It makes my skin feel very soft and smooth.

Cons: I really don’t like the packaging. I find the scooper and jar messy- I would much prefer a dropper or a pump.

If I wanted it simply for the snail ingredient, there is only 50% snail secretion filtrate. This may be a negative for those after a simple snail product, but as an all in one ampoule, it actually (potentially) includes other benefits from the additional ingredients.

Conclusion: I’ve really enjoyed using this so far. It adds more snail and thus more soothing to my routine, absorbs pretty quickly, isn’t too heavy, gives some moisture to my skin, and with such a huge jar will probably last me forever! The consistency is quite watery, and it is not as moisturizing as some of my other ampoules, but it does what I want it to do in terms of light moisture, softening, soothing and helping the healing process of troubled skin.

Finally, in first place is a snail product that I have not stopped loving over our eight month relationship, and telling everyone I know to purchase. It’s a COSRX classic, and its 96% snail secretion filtrate…that makes a snail enthusiast like myself very excited.

Product name: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Product Description: The label states that the essence ‘protects skin from moisture loss and keeps skin smooth, and healthy without the use of heavy oils’. I pat the essence into my skin after my first essence.

Pros: The ingredient list is super simple, and the product contains an incredible 96% snail secretion filtrate. With such a simple list, it makes the product less likely to be irritating, and also means you can reap the benefits of the magical snail!

The effect of this on my skin has been the most dramatic of almost all beauty products I have tried, particularly when I am breaking out. I apply it all over my face, with a concentration on the troubled area, and by morning that area is always less red and pimples are smaller and less noticeable. The healing process is dramatically faster when I use this.

Even when I don’t have a breakout, this product makes my skin feel lovely and soft and smooth. It’s light enough to use morning and night, and absorbs quickly.

There is no scent, which appeals to me. Like the Scinic Ampoule, whilst it is not hugely moisturizing, it does add a layer of moisture to my routine. It’s great value for a product which such fantastic results.

Cons: In my opinion, there are no cons. Some people may find the texture a little bit bizarre- I guess it’s slightly gooey (as you would imagine pure snail slime), but this does go away once you’ve applied it, and there is no sticky feeling.

Conclusion: This is a truly important product for me to maintain and achieve the skin I want, and I use it twice daily without fail. The results are so apparent, and I love the simplicity that COSRX achieve so well.
