Sites of Hangang-Speaking in Details

사진은 외부세계를 기계적으로 재현하는데 멈추지 않는다. 그 단순한 재현을 넘어서는 여러 차원의 겹들이 동시에 쌓이는데 그 하나는 사진 찍는 이의 의도적인 선택과 배제가 그것이다. 아울러 그 선택이란 것도 의도적인 선택과 무의식적인 선택이 공존한다.

Photos do not stop at mechanically reproducing the outside world. Exceeding such simple reproduction, it simultaneously accumulates layers of several dimensions, and among them, one is the intentional selection and exclusion of the person taking the photography. Moreover, this selection includes both intentional selection and unconscious selection.

주지하다시피 프로이트는 사진이 나오는 과정, 즉 현상이나 인화의 과정들을 통해 이미지가 나오는 과정들은 무의식이 의식이 되는 과정과 무의식에 있는 기억들이 뒤에 의식으로 나타날 수 있다는 점에서 그 유사성을 언급한 바 있다.

Freud mentioned that the process of photography, or in other words, that the process of creating images by the process of developing or printing is similar to the process of unconscious becoming conscious and that subconscious memories can appear as conscious memories.

작가는 한강의 이곳저곳을 걸어 다니며 볼 수 있는 그 풍경을 찍었다. 파노라마 구도 속에 잡힌 한강은 늘 건물, 나무나 풀과 함께 등장한다. 상대적으로 광활하게 드러난 하늘은 다양한 색채와 다채로운 구름의 형상으로 가득하다.

The author walked along the Han River and took pictures of the scenery. The Han River in a panorama angle always appears with buildings, trees and grass. The relatively vast sky is filled with various colors and assorted shapes of clouds.

전경에 펼쳐진 건물과 수평으로 드러누운 한강, 그 전경에 불쑥 자리한 나무가 있거나 한강 주변을 채우고 있는 나무와 풀들이 가득한 풍경이다. 또한 컬러사진이지만 다분히 모노톤으로 조율되어 전체적으로 차분하고 균질해 보인다.

The panoramic buildings and horizontally laying Han River has a protruding tree or is filled with trees and grass that make up the Han River area. In addition, though they are color photos, they are adjusted to monotone, giving it in an overall calm and consistent appearance.

그에게 한강은 기억의 매몰과 복구를 상징하는 장소이자 사진 찍은 일은 그저 지나쳤던 세상의 세부들을 하나 둘씩 인식해나가는 과정은 아닐까. 이처럼 세부를 읽어내는 방식, 세부로 말하는 방식이 바로 정신분석이라면 정신과의사인 그가 증세를 발견하듯이 세부적으로 한강을 찍고 있다는 사실이 새삼 흥미롭다.

To him, the Han River is aplace that symbolizes the burial and restoration of memories, and to him, taking photos may just be a process of remembering the details of the world that he has overlooked. If the method of reading details and speaking in details is psycho-analysis, it would be interesting to think that he, who is a psychiatrist, is taking pictures of the Han River in detail as if he was looking for symptoms.
