해학반도도

민화는 생활 주변을 비롯한 현실의 모든 물상을 맘껏 다루고, 비현실적인 세계의 온갖 상상물까지 무한 소재로 삼는다. 소재의 개방성이랄까, 그래서 여느 그림과는 달리 환상성을 갖는다.

The painters used all of the objects along with the environment of daily life freely and unlimitedly make imaginary things of non-real world as materials to pain Minhwa. Due to their openness about materials, they have the feature of fantasy.

연화도

까치와 호랑이가 어울리는가 하면, 상상의 영역에서 가능한 봉황과 용이 등장한다. 해와 달이 한 화면에 함께하고, 백 마리의 사슴들이 동시 출현한다. 그야말로 환상의 극치다. 이 때문에 논리적으로 어긋남직한 상황이 발생하나 그것이 되려 자연스럽다.

A magpie hangs out with a tiger and dragons and bonghwang which only exist in imaginary world appears in Minhwa. The sun is up with the moon and a hundred of deers appears together in Minhwa. It's just the extreme case of fantasy. Though unlikely situations arise like this, they seems to be natural dramatically.

이를테면 백 마리의 사슴이 등장하는 그림의 경우, 백 마리 사슴[百鹿]은 ‘百祿’을 뜻하고 결국 벼슬길에 나아가 출세하라는 메시지를 담고 있다. 이 얼마나 명쾌한 논리인가.

For example, the picture of one hundred of deers contains the message to secure a government positon and rise in the world, by one hundred deer 백록 which sounds same to 백록. What a exquisite logic!

십장생도

민화는 일종의 꿈을 그린 그림이다. 이를테면 원망달성의 꿈이라고나 할까. 부부의 금슬을 기원하고 다산과 오복을 갈구하며, 무병장수를 꿈꾸고 부귀공명을 희망한다. 그래서 민화를 일컬어 ‘실용적인 그림’이라 한다.

Minhwa is the kind of paintings of dream. In other words, minhwa may be of achieving dream you waited so long to realize. People prayed for good relationship with spouse, wanted to give many births and five blessings(longevity, wealth, health, love of virtue, peaceful death), hoped for moobyngjangsu(health and logevity) and buguigongmyung(wealth and fame) through painting Minhwa. So we call minhwa as the paintings for practical purpose.
